Peterson Calls On Herbert to Extend Residential Eviction Moratorium

Candidate for Governor Recommends Creation of Emergency Task Force to Ease Economic Impact on Landlords

May 13, 2020 – SALT LAKE CITY, Utah Utah’s Democratic nominee for governor Chris Peterson is calling on Gov. Gary Herbert to extend the Utah State residential eviction moratorium and create a task force to minimize the impact of coronavirus on business operations of the residential housing industry. The state’s eviction moratorium is set to expire on May 15.

“We need to act to protect Utahns and their children from being turned out of their homes,” said gubernatorial candidate and consumer advocate Chris Peterson. “The state should step up with practical solutions for these families as well as easing negative impacts on landlords, who are mostly small business owners.”

Peterson is calling on Gov. Herbert and Lt. Gov. Spencer Cox to:

  • Extend the residential eviction moratorium until at least August.
  • Create an emergency Residential Housing Landlord Support Task Force to assist landlords in obtaining financial assistance from financial institutions as well as federal, state, and local governments.
  • Offer more resources for Utah tenants to understand whether their evictions are federally protected.
  • Develop a plan that expands the moratorium to home mortgage foreclosures.
  • Require landlords and tenants to engage in a repayment plan based on the tenant’s ability to repay unpaid rent.

“In this time of economic uncertainty, these are necessary precautions to come together in the pioneer spirit and stop the rising tide of homelessness in our state,” said Karina Brown, Democratic candidate for Lt. Gov.

Many Utahns still have not received their promised federal stimulus check, meaning both landlords and tenants haven’t received federal assistance from the federal or state government.

“We need to put our shoulders to the wheel to make a real plan for Utahns whose homes and livelihoods are at stake,” Peterson said. “Many people will be left behind if the state does not step up.”
