Peterson campaign discusses union worker protections and assistance during COVID-19
June 15, 2020 — Salt Lake City, Utah
In light of the 287-case outbreak of COVID-19 at a Northern Utah meatpacking plant, the Chris Peterson for Utah Campaign will host a Facebook Live conversation with Jim McLaughlin, President of United Food and Commercial Workers Union Local 99 (UFCW Local 99). The event will stream live Monday, June 15 at 7 p.m. on the Chris Peterson for Utah Governor Facebook page.
The conversation between McLaughlin, Chris Peterson, and Karina Brown will center around the role of UFCW’s local chapter in the Hyrum, Utah meatpacking plant where 287 workers contracted COVID-19. McLaughlin will also share his experience and discuss worker protections and assistance for workers who contract COVID-19.
“Workers preparing and providing food for Utah families are heroes,” Peterson said. “Listening to union leaders like Jim McLaughlin is important because Utah’s food workers should be offered the utmost protections against COVID-19. They deserve better.”
UFCW Local 99 provides a powerful voice for working people in Utah and Arizona. McLaughlin recently called on union members to remain vigilant as Utah has relaxed guidelines in response to COVID-19. McLaughlin warned in May that union member food workers may experience abusive behaviors by customers, stress and anxiety, as well as encouraging hazard bonuses and appreciation pay.
Viewers of the Facebook Live will be able to submit questions and engage in discussion with McLaughlin and the candidates. Click here to RSVP and view the Facebook Live event.
